BACK TO THE 80s
In the early 1980s, digital audio technologies were quietly reshaping the studio. With cleaner signal paths and a dramatically lower noise floor, recordings began to reveal textures and space. Soft passages breathed, transients rose and fell with intention, and the sound opened into something clearer. The refined dynamic presence in early digital reproductions changed listener expectations, setting the stage for an evolution that would redefine hi-fidelity.
In 1986, a young engineer in San Diego recognized what this shift in sound would demand. He staked his future on a simple philosophy: keep it True to the Source®. From that belief, Digital Designs was born, a company dedicated to building speakers capable of revealing this emerging clarity in full.
“We didn’t want to make a particular style of sound to be known for, we wanted to pass through what was recorded, with the least change in energy. The listener can decide what shape the sound should take and at what level it should play. Our job was to ensure whatever they chose, it came through clean, pure, and undistorted. Simply, True To The Source audio.”

This philosophy was the starting place in the engineering of the original LSS-161 close field monitor. The LSS-161 was integral to the early success of Digital Designs, and almost 40 years after its introduction, it’s back, loaded with DD AUDIO’s new C Series Woofer and Tweeter – components that are, at every level, high fidelity.
In the upper range the tweeters produce a rich, airy feeling that reveals clear detail with every octave.
In the midrange the woofers render vocals with distinctly natural and life-like character, while delivering band instruments and samplings with smooth layering.
In the lower range you will be stunned by the clean, tight beats and be lulled by the rhythmic transient response.
In the LSS-161 bass reflex cabinet these components will produce musicality without ear fatigue and resolution without edge.

The low-to-mid frequency driver in the LSS-161 comes from the development of DD’s C Series 6.5″ woofer, which excels in both infinite baffle and bass reflex designs. Its combination of low moving mass, tight magnetic control, and linear suspension allows for accurate tracking of transient signals.
The curvilinear, shallow composite cone uses an asymmetrically woven carbon-and-glass fibre structure that provides high rigidity while maintaining natural damping to suppress upper-band ringing modes.
This ultra-light cone is paired with an NBR rubber surround that is flexible, durable, and light enough to support high sensitivity while further reducing edge resonance.
The bifilar-wound voice coil lowers moving mass and improves sensitivity and power handling, while a shorting ring in the motor system reduces inductance for low distortion performance.
The high-frequency driver in the LSS-161 is based on the C Series 20mm broadband tweeter, a true marvel of current material science and acoustic design, engineered for exceptional bandwidth and transient precision. Its magnesium-aluminum alloy diaphragm is only 0.035 mm thick, combining extreme rigidity with very low mass to extend response and speed. The diaphragm is suspended by a carefully shaped silk surround that maintains stability across a wide operating range, enabling usable bandwidth from roughly 600 Hz to over 40 kHz. A dual-magnet neodymium motor with copper shorting rings maintains a stable magnetic field, reduces inductance modulation, and lowers distortion. The rear cavity back chamber and front waveguide of this tweeter have been tuned specifically for the LSS-161 application.
Merging the soundfield into a cohesive flow is a phase stable crossover design utilizing high performance parts chosen for minimal electrical signature, terminated by gold plated, pure copper binding posts.

The state of the art C Series components and LSS-161 bass reflex cabinet were designed in tandem to ensure simpatico performance. The low velocity port design has an extremely large cross section area that reinforces the lowest bass frequencies without turbulence robbing efficiency, coupling smooth bass extension effortlessly into the room. The inner port structure is also designed to internally brace the cabinet walls into a singular stiff structure. The internal shape is designed to break up standing waves that could smear midrange frequencies.
The double baffle serves multiple functions, rigidly holding the acoustic drivers eliminating vibrational losses, merging the acoustic responses of the drivers while the double step reduces edge diffraction at the cabinet boundaries.
The furniture grade finish is a natural walnut and black lacquer combination offering a timeless design enhancing any living area, desktop or monitor console. The cabinet bottom is equipped with screw in gold plated feet complete with scratch protection discs and the cloth grill is suspended by invisible magnets.

Audio devices of all kinds are a sum of their parts, so that is where the design stages begin. Following the energy as it moves through the parts, the magnetic motor system, the alternating current being delivered, the physical materials on the way to sound wave propagation of air molecules.
Audio devices of all kinds are a sum of their parts, so that is where the design stages begin. Following the energy as it moves through the parts, the magnetic motor system, the alternating current being delivered, the physical materials on the way to sound wave propagation of air molecules.
Approaching this project with more than four decades of audio experience we purposefully chose to assume nothing, and instead dove into the physics of all these areas with renewed passion and eagerness. Magnetics, material science, adhesives, conductivity, and much more. We were looking for better ways to ensure energy transfer with the least amount of disruption or dissipation and nothing was ignored. What we learned can be found in the Digital Designs LSS-161. It isn’t simply a re-release, but a re-discovery.
